Internship Opportunities

College Intern

College Interns must apply between September 1 and December 1 of their junior year. If you are interested in applying for an internship, you should contact the career services counselor at your college. Your counselor may then contact this office on your behalf. Our college internship program is strictly for rising seniors. The position is unpaid. We encourage participants to seek credit if possible. Students work a minimum of 24 hours per week.

The internship runs from early June to mid-August. Students must undergo a full background check to qualify.

Responsibilities vary according to assignment but generally interns participate in three core activities:

Participation: Interns will perform filing, light research, library organization, data entry and scanning and other computer related tasks. There are several trips during the summer including to the NJ State House and the 9/11 Museum and Memorial.

Observation: Interns are encouraged to attend court as often as possible. They are also included in appropriate meetings and interviews.

Interaction: Interns will speak to attorneys, police officers, victim/witness advocates and clerical staff to gain from their collective personal experiences. It may also be possible to have them speak with members of the defense bar, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department and a Superior Court Judge. Additionally, interns will receive assistance with résumé writing and interviewing skills to assist them in seeking future employment.

Law Intern

Law interns are assigned to various units of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. They conduct legal research, write legal memoranda, observe court proceedings and learn about the office through special lectures hosted by chief assistant prosecutors and law enforcement supervisors. Law interns may also appear at guilty plea, sentencing and other hearings.

The internship runs from early June to mid-August. The position is paid.

Our law intern program strongly prefers law students who will be rising 3Ls at the time of the internship. Candidates with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Please apply through your on-campus interview program if the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office is interviewing for interns at your school. If not, please use the button below to send a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcript and brief writing sample (approximately five to ten pages).
