Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of a JUVENILE on charges of attempted murder, robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of hollow nose ammunition.  The arrest is the result of an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Hackensack Police Department under the direction of Officer in Charge Deputy Chief Darrin DeWitt.

On Sunday, May 29, 2022, at approximately 8:59 p.m., the Hackensack Police Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting at the Deli Mart located at 789 Main Street in Hackensack.  Responding officers observed a 33-year-old Hispanic male outside the Deli Mart on the ground with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.   Officers received information that a Hispanic male had shot the victim and also fired shots toward two other males nearly striking them before fleeing the area.  The victim was treated by members of the Hackensack Fire Department Engine 5 until Hackensack University Medical Center Ambulance responded to the scene.  The ambulance later transported the victim to the Hackensack University Medical Center where he was treated and released several days later.

On Sunday, June 5, 2022, at approximately 7:46 p.m., the Hackensack Police Department received a report of an armed robbery in the area of Fairmount Avenue and Allen Street.  The victim reported a Hispanic male brandished a handgun and demanded that the victim turn over a backpack.  The victim complied and the suspect fled.

An investigation conducted by detectives from the Hackensack Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit revealed that a JUVENILE from Hackensack shot the victim in the Deli Mart on May 29, 2022.  The investigation also revealed that the same JUVENILE committed the robbery in the area of Fairmount Avenue and Allen Street.

On Wednesday, June 8, 2022, JUVENILE was arrested in Hackensack, NJ and charged with three counts of first-degree attempted murder, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-1a(1)/2C:11-3a(1); first-degree robbery, N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1a(3); second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1); second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1); and fourth-degree possession of hollow nose ammunition, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3f(1).  He was remanded to the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and he would like to thank the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and Hackensack Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.
