HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ MAN ARRESTED ON MURDER CHARGES

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of MICHAEL MANIS (DOB: 06/20/1952; retired) of 110 Hamilton Avenue, Hasbrouck Heights, NJ on charges related to a homicide in Hasbrouck Heights. The arrest is the result of an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department under the direction of Chief Joseph Rinke.
On Saturday, August 12, 2023, at approximately 5:01 p.m., the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department responded to a 911 call from MICHAEL MANIS, who reported that he had just arrived home and found his wife deceased. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit also responded, and the ensuing investigation determined that on Friday, August 11, 2023, MANIS killed his wife and later staged a robbery to cover up the homicide.
On Sunday, August 13, 2023, MICHAEL MANIS was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(1); second-degree disturbing/desecrating human remains, N.J.S.A. 2C:22-1a(1); third-degree hindering the apprehension of oneself, N.J.S.A. 2C:29-3b(1); and fourth-degree false report to law enforcement, N.J.S.A. 2C:28-4b.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutor Musella would like to thank the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department for their assistance with the investigation.
