Press Releases << MORRISTOWN, NJ MAN SENTENCED TO 40 YEARS IN NEW JERSEY STATE PRISON FOR DEMAREST, NJ AGGRAVATED SEXUAL ASSAULT

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced that on September 29, 2023, ALEJANDRO VELASQUEZ-MARTINEZ of Morristown, NJ was sentenced to 40 years in New Jersey State Prison after being convicted of aggravated sexual assault on a minor.

On May 12, 2023, following a four-day jury trial before the Honorable Nina Remson, J.S.C., in Bergen County Superior Court, ALEJANDRO VELASQUEZ-MARTINEZ was convicted of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. Evidence presented at trial established that on the morning of August 19, 2019, VELASQUEZ-MARTINEZ committed aggravated sexual assault on a minor under 13 years of age while he was doing tile repairs in her family’s home in Demarest, NJ.

On September 29, 2023, Judge Remson sentenced VELASQUEZ-MARTINEZ to 40 years in New Jersey State Prison, subject to the Jessica Lunsford Act and the No Early Release Act.

The State was represented by Bergen County Assistant Prosecutors Meredith Kunz and Katie McLaughlin, with the assistance of Detectives Christina Ferencevych and David Dermody, and Victim Witness Advocate Coreen Matarazzo.

Prosecutor Musella thanks Assistant Prosecutors Kunz and McLaughlin for their zealous advocacy for the victim and her family and for helping combat sexual assault in Bergen County through this sentencing. Prosecutor Musella also commends the detectives of his Special Victims Unit as well as members of the Demarest Police Department for their skill and professionalism in investigating this matter.
