Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal announced the arrest of JOSE BAEZ (DOB: 05/24/1972; single; and unemployed) of 11 West Harriet Ave, Apartment 308, Palisades Park, New Jersey on charges related to money laundering and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office under the direction of Chief Robert ANZILOTTI, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) West Paterson Post of Duty under the direction of Group Supervisor Steve ORTMAN, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of Sheriff Michael SAUDINO.
On Friday, February 24, 2017, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office conducted a motor vehicle stop in Fort Lee, New Jersey. The driver of the vehicle, Jose BAEZ, gave police consent to search his vehicle and $63,500.00 was located in an aftermarket electronic hidden compartment inside of the vehicle. He was also in possession of $2,358.00. Following the motor vehicle stop, a court-authorized search warrant was issued for Mr. Baez’s residence. A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of an additional $318,980.00 and approximately 4 kilograms of suspected cocaine.
Jose BAEZ was arrested without incident and was charged with one count of Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance, namely Cocaine, in a Quantity Greater than Five Ounces, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-5A(1)/5B(1), a First Degree Crime; one count of Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance, namely Cocaine, Within One Thousand Feet of a
School Zone, in Violation of N.J.S. 2C:35-7(a), a Third Degree Crime, and one of count of Transporting or Possessing Property Believed to be Derived from Criminal Activity, in an Amount Greater than Seventy-Five Thousand Dollars and Less than Five Hundred Thousand Dollars, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-25A ,a Second Degree Crime. Mr. BAEZ was issued a warrant and held at the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in the Bergen County Central Judicial Processing Court.
Prosecutor Grewal states that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and would also like to thank the DEA and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
