Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal announced the arrest of MARIA LEMA (DOB: 3/06/1991; divorced; and employed as a housekeeper) of Hackensack, New Jersey on a charge of Child Abuse. The arrest is the result of a joint investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti, and the Hackensack Police Department under the direction of Officer in Charge Francesco Aquila.
On Tuesday, June 20, 2017, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit were contacted by the Division of Child Protection and Permanency and advised that a juvenile female attended school with an injury to her leg. An investigation was initiated by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victim’s Unit and the Hackensack Police Department.
As a result of the investigation, Maria LEMA was arrested and charged with one count of Child Abuse, in violation of N.J.S.A. 9:6-3, a 4th degree crime. LEMA was released on a Summons and is scheduled for a first appearance in Bergen County Central Judicial Processing Court on July 10, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.
Prosecutor Grewal states that this charge is merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and would also like to thank the Hackensack Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.
