SHELDON LEE OF NEW YORK, NY CHARGED WITH ELUDING POLICE AND HINDERING APPREHENSION
Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal announced the arrest of SHELDON LEE (DOB: 04/27/1971; separated; and employed as a barber) of New York, New York, on charges of Eluding an Officer with a Risk of Death or Injury and Hindering Apprehension by Providing False Information. The arrest is the result of a joint investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department under the direction of Sheriff Michael Saudino and the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department under the direction of Chief Michael Coppola.
On Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at approximately 12:02 a.m., while conducting stationary radar on the southbound side of the Palisades Interstate Parkway in the area of Closter Dock Road, a Palisades Interstate Parkway police officer observed two motorcycles pass his position at a high rate of speed. The officer pulled onto the highway in an effort to perform a motor vehicle stop, at which time both motorcycles continued at a high rate of speed. The officer pursued one motorcycle which was in view. The other motorcycle fled at such a high rate of speed that it was no longer in view of the officer's vehicle. A high-speed pursuit continued for approximately 4 miles.
Upon the officer’s arrival in the area of the Fletcher Avenue exit, a large debris field was visible. The motorcycle being pursued by police continued through the debris field and left the scene. The policer officer stopped and found the first motorcyclist deceased on the side of the road. The deceased, who was operating a 2010 Yamaha motorcycle, was identified as Marlon M. Quiros, 33 years old, of 1912 3rd Avenue, Apt. 3A, New York, NY.
As a result of the investigation, Sheldon LEE was identified as the second motorcyclist and arrested on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 in New York City. He was charged with one count of N.J.S.A. 2C:29-2b, Eluding an Officer with a Risk of Death or Injury, a 2nd degree crime; and one count of N.J.S.A. 2C:29-3b(1), Hindering Apprehension by Providing False Information, a 3rd degree crime. Sheldon LEE is currently in the custody of the New York City Police Department where he is being held as a fugitive from justice while awaiting extradition.
Prosecutor Grewal states that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and would also like to thank the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department and the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.
