Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal announced the arrest of GUSTAVO I. GONZALEZ (DOB:05/18/1980; married; and self-employed) of 3821 Sonora Avenue, McAllen, Texas on a drug-related charge.  This arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Narcotics Task Force under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti, Homeland Security Investigations Newark Office under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Debra Parker, the Fort Lee Police Department under the direction of Chief Keith Bendul, and  the Port Authority Police Department under the direction of Superintendent Michael A. Fedorko.

On August 5, 2017, an investigation was conducted regarding the distribution of cocaine by an individual identified as Gustavo I. GONZALEZ.  On this same date, detectives observed GONZALEZ engaged in a drug transaction and then drive towards the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, New Jersey.  An investigative motor vehicle stop was conducted.  The ensuing consent search of the vehicle revealed suspected cocaine inside two car batteries that were hollowed out as hidden compartments. Each car battery contained three kilograms of suspected cocaine.  A total of six kilograms of suspected cocaine were located and seized from GONZALEZ’s vehicle.  GONZALEZ was placed under arrest without incident and transported to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in Paramus, New Jersey for processing. The estimated street value of the suspected cocaine is approximately $180,000.

Mr. GONZALEZ was charged with one count of Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance, namely Cocaine, in a quantity more than one-half ounce and less than five ounces, N.J.S.A. 2C:35-5A(1), a second degree crime. GONZALEZ was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Prosecutor Grewal states that this charge is merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and would also like to thank the Homeland Security Investigations Newark Office, Fort Lee Police Department, and the Port Authority Police for their assistance in this investigation.
