Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal announced the arrests of ANDREW J. JEFFERSON (DOB: 08/19/90; single; unemployed) of Orangeburg, South Carolina and DESHUN HILL (DOB: 05/26/1994; single, unemployed) of Columbia, South Carolina on charges of Attempted Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Robbery, and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. The arrests are the result of a joint investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit under the direction of Chief Robert ANZILOTTI and the East Rutherford Police Department under the direction of Officer-in-Charge Captain Dennis RIVELLI.
On Sunday, August 6, 2017, at approximately 2:58 p.m., the East Rutherford Police Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a male with stab wounds located at 300 Route 3 East. Responding officers located the male, administered first aid, and then had him transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
During the investigation, it was determined that the victim was the target of a robbery, which resulted in his stabbing and the unlawful taking of United States currency. As the investigation progressed, the suspects were identified as Andrew J. JEFFERSON and Deshun HILL.
Immediately after the robbery and stabbing, the suspects fled the area and traveled back to South Carolina. Based on the information and evidence gathered, Andrew J. JEFFERSON was arrested on Monday, August 7, 2017 and charged with Attempted Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:11-3A(1), Conspiracy to Commit Murder in violation of N.J.S. 2C:5-2A(1)/2C:11-3A(1), Robbery in violation of N.J.S. 2C:15-1A(1) and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery in violation of N.J.S. 2C:5-2A(1)/2C:15-1A(1). Deshun HILL was subsequently arrested on Thursday, August 10, 2017 on the same charges as Andrew J. JEFFERSON. Both men are being held in custody in South Carolina pending extradition to New Jersey. The investigation is continuing and additional arrests are pending.
Bergen County Prosecutor Grewal states that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and would also like to thank the East Rutherford Police Department, Richland County Sheriff’s Department (South Carolina), Orangeburg Department of Public Safety (South Carolina) and the United States Marshal’s Service for their cooperation in this investigation.
