Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal announced the arrest of SUNGMIN HA (DOB: 06/16/1979; divorced; and employed as a taxi driver) of 52 East Palisades Blvd., Palisades Park, New Jersey on charges of Sexual Assault by Sexual Contact and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The arrest is the result of a joint investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti, the Leonia Police Department under the direction of Chief Thomas Rowe, and the Palisades Park Police Department under the direction of Chief Mark Jackson.
On Wednesday, September 13, 2017, the Palisades Park Police Department and Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office received information that a male party was observed masturbating in a vehicle in front of two eleven-year-old victims in Palisades Park, New Jersey.
On Thursday, September 14, 2017, the Leonia Police Department and Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office received information that a male party fitting the same description of the person in the Palisades Park incident was observed by an adult female victim masturbating in a vehicle in Leonia, New Jersey.
As a result of the investigation, Sungmin HA was arrested on Thursday, September 14, 2017 in Leonia, New Jersey and charged with 2 counts of Sexual Assault by Sexual Contact, N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2b, a 2nd degree crime; and 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4a., a 3rd degree crime. At HA’s first appearance in Bergen County Central Judicial Processing Court on Friday, September 15, 2017, the defendant was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his detention hearing before the Honorable James X. Sattely on September 20, 2017 at 9:00am.
Prosecutor Grewal states that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and would like to thank the Leonia Police Department and Palisades Park Police Departments for their assistance in this investigation.
