The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by members of the Rutherford Police Department under the direction of Chief John R. Russo, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of Sheriff Michael Saudino, and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit under the direction of Chief of Detectives Robert Anzilotti.
On Monday, January 8, 2018 at approximately 10:20 p.m., the Rutherford Police Department received the report of a motor vehicle collision on Route 17 South, near its intersection with Highland Cross in the Borough of Rutherford. Upon responding to the scene, officers located two vehicles, both with significant front-end damage, in the southbound lanes of Route 17, immediately north of Highland Cross. Soscia SALO, who was trapped in the driver’s seat of a 2008 Dodge Caliber, was removed from the vehicle by members of the Rutherford Fire Department, and transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where she was treated for her injuries. The driver of the second vehicle, a 2005 Hyundai Accent, also had to be removed from the vehicle by the Rutherford Fire Department, and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he is currently in critical condition.
As a result of the investigation, Soscia SALO was charged with one count of Assault by Auto, N.J.S.A 2C:12-1c(1), a fourth degree crime; and one count of Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10a(1), a third degree crime. SALO was also issued motor vehicle summonses for Reckless Driving, N.J.S.A. 39:4-96; Driving on the Wrong Side of a Divided Highway, N.J.S.A. 39:4-82.1; and Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance in a Motor Vehicle, N.J.S.A. 39:4-49.1. SALO is scheduled for a first appearance in Bergen County Central Judicial Processing Court on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.
Prosecutor Grewal states that these charges are merely accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and would like to thank the Rutherford Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
