WILLIAM J. SMITH OF FAIRVIEW, NJ CHARGED WITH POSSESSION AND DISTRIBUTION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of WILLIAM J. SMITH (DOB: 7/5/80, single; and employed as laborer) of 467 Walker Street, Second Floor, Fairview, New Jersey on charges of Possession and Distribution of Child Pornography.  The arrest is the result of a joint investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Cyber Crimes Unit under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti and the Fairview Police Department under the direction of Chief Martin Kahn.

On Wednesday, January 31, 2018, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit executed a search warrant at the residence of William J. SMITH during the course of an Internet child pornography investigation.  The investigation revealed that William J. SMITH used the Internet to view, possess, and distribute digital files depicting nude or sexually explicit prepubescent and pubescent children.          

As a result of the investigation, William J. SMITH was arrested on January 31, 2018 and charged with one count of Distribution of Child Pornography in an amount greater than 25 files, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4(b)5(a), a second degree crime; and one count of Possession of Child Pornography in an amount greater than 100 files, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4(b)5(b), a third degree crime.  SMITH was remanded to the Bergen County Jail and is scheduled for a first appearance in Bergen County Central Judicial Processing Court on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.

 Acting Prosecutor Calo states that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.  He would also like to thank the Fairview Police Department and the municipal police agencies that lend support to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Task Force and whose personnel assisted with this investigation, namely the Bogota Police Department, the Ramsey Police Department, the Rochelle Park Police Department, and the Saddle River Police Department.
