Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced additional information in an investigation into a fatal crash involving the death of two previously unidentified victims that occurred on Saturday, October 21, 2023 on Teaneck Road in Teaneck, NJ. The investigation is being conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Teaneck Police Department under the direction of Chief Andrew McGurr.

On Saturday, October 21, 2023 at approximately 2:08 a.m., the Teaneck Police Department received a 911 call reporting a single motor vehicle accident on Teaneck Road near Bilton Street. Responding officers found that a 2021 BMW M850i operated by TEDDY MEJIA had left the roadway and struck a tree before overturning. MEJIA was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of bodily injuries while two passengers, identified as 40-year-old Rudy Rosales Escobar of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ and 29-year-old Alexander Cosme Curruchich of Englewood, NJ, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
MEJIA was suspected of operating his motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and was placed under arrest. During the arrest, a suspected controlled dangerous substance was recovered from his person.

As a result of the investigation, TEDDY MEJIA was charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide while in violation of driving while intoxicated, N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5(1); and third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10a(1). MEJIA was also issued motor vehicle summonses for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and failure to maintain a lane. MEJIA was served with his charges at Hackensack University Medical Center, and upon his release will be remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and he would like to thank the Teaneck Police Department, the Teaneck Fire Department, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in this investigation.
